For centuries, forests, mountains, and the most unexpected corners of Japan have been said to harbor creatures that defy all logic. Known as yōkai, these supernatural beings can take on the most extraordinary forms
Yokai - Tengu, the power of mountains and wind.
Central to legends and folklore, yokai embody the mysteries of the world and reflect the intuitive and symbolic side of Japanese popular culture. Some provoke, others protect, and all spark the imagination. Attributing magical powers, whimsical humor, or ancient wisdom to them is part of a tradition that remains very much alive.
One of the best-known yokai is Tengu, a mountain spirit with avian features, famous for its prominent nose and defiant temper. This interpretation in matte porcelain reimagines the legendary Tengu through a contemporary lens, emphasizing refined forms with a strong visual impact. The use of solid colors such as pistachio green, white, and black enhances this clean aesthetic and creates a vibrant contrast.
The hand-carved wings recall the original character, adding texture, volume, and dynamism. The glazed finish on the face and horns introduces a play of light that heightens the expressiveness of the piece.
Through lines, colors, and form, this particular Tengu offers a contemporary vision of an ancient and fascinating universe. A creation that bridges past and present through the language of design.
